Episode #18: Russian Cinema Today

01-10-2019

In this episode Eileen and Evgenia talk to Maria Kuvshinova, a prominent Russian film critic, author of books on directors Alexei Balabanov and Alexander Mindadze, and the founder of Russia’s first feminist film blog: https://kkbbd.com/.

Maria talked to us about how the Russian film industry works, why there is virtually no independent cinema in Russia, and why no one needs Russian film directors abroad. She also tells us about James Cameron’s role in reviving Russian film theaters in the late 1990s. It’s all about Titanic!

P.S. Our next episode is finally gonna tackle the Great Tarkovsky Mystery with a special Russian guest. So stay tuned…and subscribe!
