In this episode, Evgenia and Eileen tackle gender-swap films such as the 2016 Ghostbustersreboot, Ocean’s 8 (2018), and the current hit Captain Marvel, as well as the upcoming movies The Hustle (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels but with women) and the all-girl Lord of the Flies (described in one mocking tweet as “Heathers Goes to Camp”). These films get hyped as addressing the shortage of good film roles for women in Hollywood, but how good are they really? They’re often sold as feminist films made in support of women, and get linked to the #MeToo movement, which exposed the plight of women in Hollywood (and elsewhere) trying to build careers in a shitstorm of sexual coercion, harassment, and assault. But it’s hard to see an all-women version of Ocean’s 11 as any kind of progress.
